Our Rating

5/5

When it comes to mandolines, the key is always in the design and components — no need to reinvent the wheel. A quality mandoline is all about functionality and adjustability, giving you everything you need to make fast and precise work out of your ingredients.

The Progressive International PL8-1000 Mandoline Slicer is the perfect example of this, combining high-quality materials and smart design into an easy-to-use tool that is the perfect asset to any kitchen.

Progressive International PL8-1000 Mandoline

The Pl8-1000 is a manual model, and includes a vegetable holder with built-in textures to keep everything in place. The overall profile of the mandoline is a little larger than most models, but not so much as to be annoying or feel like it’s taking too much space.

The surface and blades of the mandoline are crafted from top-tier stainless steel, and offer a very rigid and sturdy feel. This is complemented by durable plastic casing on the body and legs, and some very appreciated no-slip grips on the bottom.

Like every great mandoline, the PL8-1000 is very adjustable. By using the knobs on the left side, you can adjust the thickness of the cut from 1mm, all the way up to 7mm, giving you a wide range between paper thin and thick. This gives the mandoline lots of versatility with a range of ingredients.

Progressive International PL8-1000 Side Review

The versatility doesn’t end there, however. You can also choose from two different julienne slicing options, and also convert the blade to cut two different types of waffle cuts. These adjustments can be made in a matter of seconds, so as to not mess up your flow when cutting numerous ingredients.

When not in use, the legs of the PL8-1000 quickly fold up, allowing you to store it away. All of the parts are dishwasher safe, but it is recommended that you dry the parts upon washing to keep them in optimal condition.

What We Like

The aspects that stand out most with the PL8-1000 are its stability, and the multiple adjustments you have to choose from. The mandoline just has a very solid feel, provides plenty of surface to work with, and is just easy to use in general.

The ability to go from paper-thin slices to thicker slices in just a few seconds is great, as is the several options for julienne and waffle cuts. This is really all you can ask from a mandoline built for home use.

What Needs Work

With that said, there’s really no negatives that come to mind with this product in terms of functionality and results. There’s probably some who would prefer more than one color option, but that’s just getting picky — this is a mandoline after all.

Buying Advice

Progressive International PL8-1000 Review

Progressive International does make a cubing version of this mandoline, so keep that in mind if you’re in need of one.

The Verdict

At the end of the day, it’s hard to ask for more from a home kitchen mandoline. The PL8-1000 has a commercial feel to it, is well-designed, made from solid materials, and offers more adjustability than most mandolines — and all for a great price. This one should be at the top of your list.
